Headquarter Squadron is responsible for providing logistic support to the 5th Aviation Regiment. Headquarter Squadron provides diverse but crucial support to the Regiment. Without this Squadron, the Regiment would not be able to sustain its flying capability. This support is provided by five areas of specialisation which are described below.

Transport Troop. Transport Troop plays a significant role within 5th Aviation Regiment. It holds the largest transport fleet in the Australian Army with many different vehicle variants. The Troop is also responsible for driver training and licencing to soldiers within the Regiment for all the types of vehicles the unit holds. In the last 12 months 5th Aviation Regiment has received new Mack Fleetliners for refuelling aircraft. The unit has also received new one tonne trailers for towing behind the six wheelers and four wheel All Terrain Vehicles. In the future Transport Troop plan to exchange some of their military vehicle fleet for non-military vehicles to improve our ability to provide transport support across the Regiment.

Regiment Aid Post. The Regiment Aid Post provides medical support to the members of the Regiment. The Post consists of a doctor, nurse and medics of various ranks. With the diverse workload placed on 5th Aviation Regiment that same diversity is reflected within the Regiment Aid Post, which is called upon to do a variety of tasks. Like all such facilities we have to provide primary care to unit members through a daily sick parade and medical appointments. Each squadron is assigned a medic who is responsible for their operational readiness (inoculations, medical boards etc.) as well as medical training and any exercise or operational requirements. Medics are expected to be able to deploy with the squadron they are assigned to at short notice, both within and outside Australia, to provide a given level of care. Tasks could include looking after a troop deployment to PNG for high altitude training or primary Rotary Wing Aeromedical Evacuation operations.
It is not uncommon to be posted to the Regiment Aid Post and only see other members for one or two weeks a year, due to the commitment of members to places like East Timor, the Solomon Islands or on courses. Understandably, the Regiment Aid Post has additional responsibilities to other unit Posts due to the aviation focus. The doctor is aviation medicine qualified, in order to maintain aircrew currency. The nurse and all medics are advanced medic qualified, specialising in pre-hospital trauma life support and rotary wing aeromedical evacuation as a basic requirement, with an emphasis on maintaining competence in these fields.
In summary, the Regiment Aid Post at 5th Aviation Regiment is a very dynamic, exciting and rewarding job with ample opportunity to experience the best of Army Aviation.
Q Store. The Main Q store is the location from which the unit can source all items of supply (less aircraft parts), from clothing and tentage through to weapons, electrical appliances and generators. With the implementation of new computerised supply tracking programs and general replenishment requirements following the East Timor operations, the store has been a constant hive of activity.
Our ideal status is to have a fully stocked warehouse that has appropriate stores tracking and acquisition methodologies in place to service the needs of the Regiment. In concert with this, we must also maintain our military skills and conduct regular technical training of both our military and contracted personnel. This includes ensuring currency on the various vehicles that the staff are required to operate on a daily basis, whether that be in barracks or the field.
Catering Troop. Catering Troop is responsible for planning, preparing and presenting catering support for the Regiment both in barracks and in the field. The Troop provides catering support in the field environment for either independent squadrons or the Regiment as a whole. In the barracks environment the Troop is responsible for functions such as formal dinners, spouses dinners, BBQs, buffets and any other events the Regiment requires.
Aircraft Support Troop. Aircraft Support Troop or Tanker Pool, is responsible for the fuelling of all Regiment aircraft. Tanker Pool consists of personnel who work day and night to ensure all aircraft are refuelled as necessary. The equipment in Tanker Pool consists of Mack Fleetliners with a Fuel Pod mounted on the tray. The Pool also uses Tanker pump assemblies and Twinsteer vehicles.
